So it’s been a couple of weeks since the Perverse remix comp finished and went up as part of their ‘Progression' series of EPs on the almighty FatKidOnFire, but when I hit up US duo Defender and NZ producer Drillah and they sent me their remixes which they didn’t submit to the competition - I was more than tempted to put together an EP - so here it is!!
Massive shouts out to Defender, Drillah, Perverse and of course FatKidOnFire!!
I’ve been following FatKidOnFire for some time now (most of you reading this will of course know about FKOF - focusing on the deeper end of dubstep and D&B, along with the odd bit of fashion as well), so it was nice to sit down with the man behind it all - Wil Benton - and get a few words off him…
D - First of all, for those who don’t know, what is FatKidOnFire all about?
FKOF - In its simplest, FatKidOnFire is a soapbox for independent brands and musicians to ‘market’ themselves to an engaged and global audience. It’s also a blog for a few friends and I to write for when we get the chance!
D - You must hear a lot of new music everyday, so what are your top 5 most exciting producers/DJs at the moment and why? Who do you think will be a big name next year?
FKOF - I’m pretty amazed at the amount of music that ends up in my inbox these days. Shouts to each and everyone one of you who sends me new bits asking for feedback - sorry it takes a bit of time to get back to you all!
-Kaiju - these guys, in my opinion, have always been destined for great things. Having heard what’s coming out of their studio recently, I’m pretty sure these boys will be everywhere next year -Darj - when Korrupt introduced me to Darj, his sound blew me away. His rise in followers (and the tunes he’s building) reminds me of when Perverse first blew up -Quantum Soul - Guy’s been about for a good, long time. His productions are unrivalled - it’s about damn time he started getting the recognition he deserves! -The Illuminated - these Dutch boys are killing the tunes at the moment. I’ve heard legendary stories about their Maasbass events as well, look out for a FKOF takeover one day -FNC - collab production duo made up of my boy Content and the awesome Fornax. These guys are onto something special - lots of amazing sounds coming.
Big name for next year has to be Wayfarer. I first met Alex a few weeks back at the FKOF x MUD clash and his dubs folder is truly, truly amazing. He’s calmed down on the bongo rape (jokes, sorry Alex!) with the fresher stuff and there’s some pretty decent dubstep in there! His ‘Fallof the Zulu‘ bit (and the VIP) is in the top 3 tunes of the year for me.
D - How did your blog come about? What inspired you to start it? What was the original concept?
FKOF - The blog started back when I was in my final year of my biomedical science degree, started as a little tumblr blog to ignore my dissertation! I started it because I was a little bit disappointed with the fashion blogs out there who were all recycling the same press releases and not bringing anything new to the reader.
That kind of rolled on for a bit and then I started talking to a few friends who were DJing and started hosting mixtapes. Then that moved into featuring producers and labels and here we are now!
D - Are there any labels that you’re feeling right now? Any up-and-coming labels that you think will be making moves next year?
FKOF - There’s a good number of new labels coming up; Badimup, Uprise Audio, Mu Djina, Vulcan Audio, Paradise Lost (to name but a few) - everyone making some impressive moves with big releases.
There’s the standard list as well - Innamind, Bacon Dubs, M.U.D and the others. Hat tip to them all!
D - How did you get into the deeper, darker side of dubstep? What was the first ever true dubstep tune you heard?
FKOF - I can’t quite remember how I first got into it all to be honest. Caspa and Rusko’s ‘Fabriclive.37' was a game changer for me (still is one of the finest compilations out there), Skream’s anthems (as always) and then on and deeper into the rabbit hole.
D - Have you ever thought of producing/DJing? If so what artist name would you have given yourself?
FKOF - I dabble. Let’s leave it at that!
Haha, na I made tunes a long time ago, didn’t really keep it up. I mix now and again, but nothing publicly!
(*D – Sorry Wil, had to ask haha)
D - Got to ask this question because I’ve always wondered – where did you get the inspiration from when naming ‘FatKidOnFire’?
FKOF - It was supposed to be ‘Fat Kids Catch Fire’ - but that was too long for Twitter (I joined Twitter before starting the blog). It’s catchy, a bit different and memorable. It’s stuck since Twitter and here we are today!
D - Finally, what are your top 5 releases of this year and why?
FKOF - In no particular order: -T12EP003: this release really brought Tribe12 to my attention. Got a lot of love for Jack’s work with the label, but this had Perverse, Wayfarer, Gantz and the rest. Stupidly good EP release! -OSMUK16: a lot of work went into Kaiju’s debut release, and I’m hard pressed to think of two tracks better to announce yourselves to the world than ‘CloseBreak’ and ‘Belcanto’. Game changers! -Mala’s ‘MalaInCuba’: Mala’s held in high regard and this LP cemented why for me. Flown out to Cuba by Gilles Peterson, Mala recorded gigabytes worth of Cuban musicians then came back to London and built this album. System music that’s equally comfortable on the stereo. Album of the year for me! -Perverse’s ‘Progression’ volumes: this one’s a guilty pleasure given it was released through FKOF. I’ve watched Alex and Brett’s rise to where they are today with amazement, having discovered them when they’d only been producing for a couple of months. The quality of the four EPs they gave away, including the remixes from ‘Progression Vol. 4’, had too many asking why they were being given away - but that’s Perverse for you! -Swindle’s ‘Mischief’ (MEDI062): Swindle and Deep Medi do it again. Mala did dubstep with a Cuban twist, Swindle’s doing jazz on a 140bpm tip. Crossover’s the name of the game for 2013!
